Custom Medal Ribbons & Lanyards — Printed, Woven & Sublimated Neck Ribbons, MOQ 100
The ribbon is the first thing people see — around necks at the finish line, in finisher photos, on social media. Custom printed with event name, date, sponsors, and colors. Standard or premium materials. Ultrasonic-welded or sewn. Heat-transfer, woven, sublimated, or satin. A great ribbon makes a good medal look great.
Ribbon Types & Options
Heat-Transfer Printed
The most common and versatile ribbon type. Full-color printing on polyester ribbon via heat-transfer process. Produces vibrant, durable results. Best value for detailed designs with multiple colors, gradients, and text. Event name, date, sponsor logos — all printed in one pass.
Woven (Textured Premium)
Threads woven directly into the ribbon fabric — not printed on top. Creates a rich, textured, premium feel. Limited color palette (typically 3-6 thread colors) but with a tactile quality that printing cannot match. Elegant choice for awards ceremonies, corporate events, and high-end races.
Sublimated (Photo-Quality)
Dye-sublimation infuses color INTO the polyester fibers rather than sitting on top. Result: photographic-quality images, continuous-tone gradients, and an incredibly soft feel — no surface texture from ink. Ideal for ribbons with complex artwork, photographs, or gradient-heavy designs.
Satin Solid Color
No print — a solid-colored satin ribbon in your chosen shade. The most economical option. Works beautifully when the medal itself carries the branding and the ribbon simply complements the color scheme. Available in a wide range of colors matched to Pantone.
Dual-Layer (Two Colors)
Different color on each side of the ribbon. One side matches your event branding; the other side carries sponsor colors or a contrast shade. Both sides can be printed. Creates visual interest when the ribbon twists or turns.
Custom Pattern Repeat
A repeating pattern runs the full length of the ribbon — event logo, geometric motif, sponsor marks, or decorative design. The pattern is seamless and continuous. Looks distinctive from any angle. Popular for signature events that want a recognizable ribbon identity.
Sponsor Logo Ribbon
Dedicated sponsor branding zone on the ribbon. Logos repeated in a pattern or placed prominently at the chest position. Sponsor recognition that travels with every medal — valuable real estate for event partners. Included at no extra charge beyond the ribbon printing cost.
Children's Shorter Length
Shorter ribbon lengths designed for children (800mm) and toddlers (700mm). Proportionate to smaller body frames — the medal hangs at the right height. Same printing quality and material as adult ribbons. Perfect for kids' races, school events, and youth sports.

Deep Dive: Everything About Medal Ribbons
01 Ribbon Types & When to Use Each
Choosing the right ribbon type depends on your design complexity, budget, and the impression you want to create. Each method has distinct strengths.
Heat-Transfer
Most common. Full color, durable, best value. Detailed designs with gradients and text print clearly. The workhorse of event ribbons — used by the majority of races and events worldwide.
Woven
Textured premium feel, limited colors, elegant. Threads are the design — there is no ink to wear off. Best for awards ceremonies, corporate recognition, and high-end events where tactile quality matters.
Sublimated
Photographic quality, soft feel, continuous-tone images. Dye infuses into fibers — no surface texture, no cracking. Ideal for ribbons with complex artwork, photographs, or gradient-heavy designs.
Satin
No print, solid color, most economical. The medal carries the branding; the ribbon provides elegant color complement. Simple, classic, cost-effective. Works well when budget is tight or the medal design is already complex.
02 Construction Methods
How the ribbon is folded and finished affects both appearance and durability. The construction method should match the medal weight and event style.
4-Fold (Standard)
Ribbon is folded twice — edges tucked inside for clean, finished appearance. Most durable construction. The standard for medal ribbons worldwide. Handles heavier medals without fraying or stretching.
3-Fold
Lighter than 4-fold, more flexible drape. Suitable for lighter medals or children's ribbons. Uses less material — marginally lower cost. Still provides clean edges but with slightly less structure.
Bias-Cut with Jump Ring
Diagonal cut at the ribbon end, attached via a single jump ring. Distinctive look — the ribbon hangs at an angle for visual interest. Common in European-style medals and fashion-forward event designs.
Ultrasonic Welding vs Sewn
Ultrasonic welding: clean, no stitching visible, modern finish, very strong bond. Sewn: traditional visible stitching, classic look, equally strong. We recommend ultrasonic for most events — it looks cleaner and eliminates thread failure risk.
03 Design Elements
A well-designed ribbon is more than a neck strap — it is a canvas for brand storytelling. Here is what to include and how to arrange it.
- Event name + date — essential. These are the two pieces of information every participant wants to see. Make them prominent.
- Sponsor logos — repeated pattern down the full ribbon length, or a single prominent placement at the chest. Repeated pattern maximizes brand impressions.
- Tagline or motto — "Run the City," "Conquer the Peak," "Earned, Not Given." A short phrase that captures the event spirit.
- Color bands — horizontal stripes matching medal plating (gold, silver, bronze) or event theme colors. Creates visual rhythm along the ribbon length.
- Full-color branding — the ribbon is a continuous-print surface. Use it. Event colors, gradients, patterns — make it unmistakably yours.
- Ribbon design included in free design service — you approve the ribbon proof alongside the medal design. Nothing goes to production until you say yes to both.
04 Color Coordination
Ribbon color should complement the medal — not compete with it. This is both an aesthetic choice and a functional one.
Classic Pairing
Gold medal + navy ribbon with gold text = timeless, distinguished. This combination works for virtually any event type and photographs beautifully.
Modern Contrast
Silver medal + black ribbon with white text = sleek, modern, high-contrast. Popular for urban races, tech conferences, and contemporary events.
Team/Event Colors
Match ribbon colors to your event brand or team identity using Pantone references. Consistent branding across all touchpoints — registration, bib, medal, ribbon.
Functional Durability
The ribbon is functional — it goes around necks, gets sweat on, gets pulled. Durability matters. Polyester is colorfast and washable. Darker ribbons hide wear better than light colors.
Customization Options
Woven Premium Ribbon
Upgrade from printed to woven for a textured, premium ribbon. Thread-based design with rich tactile quality. Limited color palette but unmatched elegance for awards and VIP medals.
Sublimated Photo-Quality
Dye-sublimation for photographic-quality images and continuous-tone gradients. Colors infused into the fiber — impossibly soft feel, no surface cracking ever.
Dual-Layer Two-Color
Different color on each side. One side event branding, the other side sponsor colors or contrast shade. Both sides printable. Adds dimension and visual interest.
Custom Width/Length
Width up to 35mm for more design real estate. Custom lengths for specific age groups or display purposes. Non-standard sizing quoted on request.
Sponsor Logo Repeat Pattern
Sponsor logos repeated in a continuous pattern along the full ribbon length. Maximum brand visibility — every photo of every medal shows the sponsor. Included in ribbon printing cost.
Children's/Youth Sizing
Shorter lengths for children (800mm) and toddlers (700mm). Proportionate to smaller frames. Same materials and print quality as adult ribbons. Ideal for kids' races and school events.
Why Choose MedalOrigin for Your Ribbons
Colorfast Polyester
Our polyester ribbons will not bleed when wet — rain, sweat, or an unexpected splash at the finish line. Colors stay locked in the fibers. Washable and durable. Tested for colorfastness to international textile standards so your ribbon looks exactly as designed, event after event.
Ultrasonic Welding Strength
Ultrasonic welding bonds the ribbon ends at a molecular level — no thread, no glue, no weak point. The weld is actually stronger than the surrounding fabric. Clean, invisible join. A ribbon failure at an event is unacceptable, and our welding process ensures it will not happen.
One Factory
Your ribbon is produced alongside your medal in the same facility. Color matching between ribbon and medal is done in-house — not by two separate suppliers guessing at each other's output. One point of contact, one quality standard, one shipment. The ribbon and medal arrive together, perfectly matched.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard ribbon size?
Adult size is 860-900mm length by 20-30mm width. Children size is 800mm length by 20mm width. Toddlers use 700mm length. These are our standard defaults. Custom sizes are available on request. Width affects how much design content and text you can fit. Length affects how the medal hangs on the body. We recommend based on your medal size and target age group.
Can you print sponsor logos on the ribbon?
Yes. Heat-transfer printing reproduces full-color sponsor logos with excellent clarity. Logos can be arranged as a repeated pattern running the full ribbon length, or as a single prominent placement at the chest position. Send vector files in .AI or .EPS format for best results. Raster files at 300dpi or higher in .PNG format are also accepted. Sponsor logo printing is included in the standard ribbon printing cost.
How is the ribbon attached to the medal?
The ribbon loops through a D-ring, dog clip, or jump ring on the medal body. The ribbon ends are joined by ultrasonic welding (clean, no visible stitching) or traditional sewing. For 4-fold ribbons, the loop is formed during the folding process. The attachment method is specified during the design phase, and we recommend the best option based on your medal style and weight.
Can I reorder ribbons only, without new medals?
Yes. Ribbons can be reordered independently of medals. Same design, same colors, same quality standards. Minimum order is 100 pieces. Production lead time is 5-7 days for ribbon-only orders since no mold or die-casting steps are needed. This is useful for annual events that reuse medal designs but want fresh ribbons each year, or for replacing worn or damaged ribbons from previous events.
Can I have different ribbons for different distances or divisions?
Yes. Common scenario: same medal design for 5K, 10K, and half marathon, but each distance gets a different ribbon color. Or different divisions get different ribbon text. Each ribbon variant must meet the 100-piece minimum. This is an effective way to distinguish categories while keeping a unified medal design across your event.
Can you match the ribbon color to my medal plating?
Yes. We match ribbon colors to Pantone references and coordinate them with your medal plating finish. Since ribbons and medals are produced in the same factory, the color matching is done in-house with direct access to both the ribbon stock and the plated medal samples. Classic combinations like gold medal with navy ribbon and gold text are our most popular, but we can match any color scheme you have in mind.
Are the ribbons washable?
Yes. Our polyester ribbons are colorfast and washable. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Lay flat to dry. Do not machine dry. The print will not bleed, fade, or crack with proper care. We recommend removing the ribbon from the medal before washing, especially if the medal has a plated finish that could tarnish with water exposure.
What is the minimum order for ribbon-only production?
100 pieces minimum for ribbon-only orders. This is the same MOQ as our medal orders. Lead time is 5-7 days since no mold production is required. For ribbons ordered alongside medals, the MOQ matches your medal order quantity and they ship together as one consignment.
