How Your Medals Are Made — Four Stages That Determine Quality
Every medal goes through 12 production steps. These four make the biggest difference between a medal that looks great in a photo and one that looks great in person.
Mold Making & Die-Casting
Your design becomes a 3D mold carved from mold steel on Beijing Jingdiao CNC machines. Spark erosion creates the matte surface texture — that's what gives medals their premium feel. The mold is heat-treated for hardness, then loaded into an 88-ton die-casting press. Zinc alloy (Zamak 3, 5, or 7) melts at 385°C and flows into the cavity under high pressure. Cycle time: 15–30 seconds per shot. The result: crisp 3D relief, openwork cutouts, and consistent wall thickness down to 2mm.
Electroplating — The 9-Stage Finish
Polishing comes first — wet-type eco-friendly machines finish edges, then faces. Then the medal enters our nine-stage plating line: degreasing → ultrasonic cleaning → alkaline copper plate (~500 seconds, builds the base layer) → acid copper plate (20–60 minutes, builds the gloss) → final color plate → drying (tunnel oven, 100°C/40 min) → anti-tarnish spray (for gold and copper finishes) → unracking. The alkaline copper step is where cheap suppliers cut corners. We don't. It's why our gold finish still looks new after years of display.
Enamel Filling & Color Precision
Soft enamel (thin, flows into recessed areas, dries slightly concave) gives that classic medal look with visible metal lines. Imitation hard enamel (thick paste, polished flat after curing) feels like ceramic — smooth, premium, more expensive. We stock 10 base colors and match to your Pantone specs. Baking: low-temp 60–70°C for 60–90 minutes (semi-cure, allows layering), then high-temp 100°C for 60 minutes (full cure). Glitter, glow-in-the-dark, and translucent effects are layered in during the semi-cure stage.
Three-Stage QC — Zero Defects Shipped
Stage 1 — Incoming material inspection: every zinc alloy ingot batch is checked for composition. Stage 2 — In-process: after die-casting (checking for cracks, water marks, air holes), after plating (checking for bubbles, flow lines), after enamel (checking for impurities, pinholes). Stage 3 — Pre-shipment: every medal in your order is individually inspected. Common defects we catch and reject: ejector pin cracks, mold vent air holes, plating bubbles from insufficient cleaning, paint pinholes from moisture in compressed air lines. Our QC team has rejected entire batches rather than ship substandard medals. That's what 100% pass rate means.
