Volleyball awards have a specific problem: the sport has almost no iconic object to put on a custom sports medal. Soccer has a ball, baseball has a ball and bat, swimming has water. Volleyball has a ball that, at small sizes, looks like every other ball.

That single constraint shapes every good volleyball medal we make. It is also why most generic volleyball medals look interchangeable. This guide is how we solve it. If you need a wider view of sport-specific awards first, our guide to sports award ideas by sport covers the full set.

What we’ll cover:

  • Making a volleyball medal identifiable without relying on the ball alone
  • Size and weight by level — youth through collegiate and adult
  • Plating tiers for league place versus tournament champion
  • Ribbon choices that suit indoor and beach
  • Quantity planning for a full league season

The Identifiability Problem

A volleyball at 20mm on a medal reads as a circle with lines. It could be a soccer ball, a tennis ball, or a basketball depending on the color fill. The fix is context, not more ball detail.

ApproachHow it worksResult
Ball + netAdds the one unmistakable volleyball elementImmediately readable
Ball + motion linesSuggests a serve or spikeEnergetic, reads at distance
Ball + handShows the contact pointIdentifiable, harder to cast clean
Net aloneDistinctive silhouette, no ball neededClean, modern, unique
Court diagramShows the playing surfaceDistinctive, best for larger sizes
Trophy + ballTraditional award framingSafe, less distinctive

The strongest single fix is adding the net. The net silhouette is unique to volleyball — no other common sport has one — and it survives die-casting well because it is a bold shape rather than fine detail. This is why sport-specific medal design matters more than generic award shapes.

The second-best fix is the court diagram. A stylized court with the attack line reads unmistakably as volleyball to anyone who plays. It needs more surface area, so it suits a 50mm medal better than a 40mm one.

Avoid putting a detailed ball with brand-like seam patterns. At 2mm minimum die-cast wall thickness, fine seams fill in or blur, and you pay for detail that does not survive. If you are choosing between production methods for the same design, our types of custom sports medals guide covers die-cast, stamped, acrylic, and other options.

Size and Weight by Level

Volleyball medals are usually worn during a ceremony, sometimes over a uniform. Size should match the level. Our custom medals range covers every level from youth to adult.

LevelSuggested diameterWeight targetRibbon
Youth / school40-45mmLight20mm wide, standard length
High school varsity45-50mmMid20-25mm, school colors
Club / travel50-55mmMid to heavier25mm, club colors
Collegiate50-55mmHeavier, more presence25-30mm
Adult league / open50-60mmHeavier25-30mm
Beach / outdoor45-55mmMid, UV-stable finishLightweight, moisture-tolerant

Beach volleyball deserves a note. Outdoor awards face sun exposure, sand, and salt or chlorine. An antique or matte finish holds up better outdoors than a mirror-bright shiny finish, which will show every handling mark and, in strong sun, blow out in photos.

For youth, keep the piece light. A heavy medal on a young neck all ceremony long is uncomfortable, and it does not make the medal feel more valuable.

League Place vs Tournament Champion

Most volleyball organizations need two award tiers, and they should not be the same medal in different colors.

AwardDesign approachPlatingQuantity
League participationOne design, single finishAntique bronze or single colorEvery player
League place (1-3)Podium designGold, silver, bronzeTop 3 teams
Regular-season championDistinct design, banner or net motifGold, antiqueOne team
Tournament championLarger, distinctive designShiny or antique goldWinning team
MVP / all-tournamentIndividual design, often smallerGold with color accentNamed players

The key decision: should the tournament champion medal be visually distinct from the league place medal, or a larger version of it?

We generally recommend distinct. A champion medal awarded at the end of a tournament should be recognizable as a different achievement from finishing second in a league. If they look the same, both are diminished.

For league participation across a long season, keep it simple. One design, one finish, ordered in one batch so every team receives matching medals.

Ribbon Choices

Volleyball ribbons are usually simple, and that is correct. The sport’s visual identity is often team colors, so ribbons carry that.

Standard ribbon spec is 860-900mm long by 20-30mm wide. A printed ribbon with the event name and year is a low-cost way to make a medal feel specific, and it costs far less than a custom mold. For how ribbons and lanyards differ, see our medal ribbon vs lanyard comparison.

If you print ribbons, lock the wording before production. Ribbon printing is not a step you can correct mid-run the way you can re-engrave a medal.

Quantity Planning for a Season

Volleyball leagues usually order in one of two shapes: one big season-wide order, or per-team orders. One big order is nearly always better.

ScenarioOrder shapeWhy
12-team league, 10 players eachOne 120-piece orderSingle tooling, matching finish
12 teams plus finals podiumOne order with podium set addedConsistent look across awards
Multiple age divisionsUniversal design + text layerAvoids tooling per division
Multi-week tournamentEstimate by registered teams, add bufferLate registrations are common

Ordering per-team means every team gets a slightly different plating batch, which shows when teams stand together. One league-wide run costs less and looks uniform.

Our MOQ is 100 pcs per design. A 12-team league at 10 players is 120 pieces, comfortably above it.

Timing is the same as any event order: design proof within 24 hours of artwork, sampling 7-10 days, production 7-15 days after approval. For a season ending in spring, start 8-10 weeks out.

What to Lock Before You Order

  1. Design count. One participation design plus one podium design covers most leagues.
  2. Level-appropriate size. 40-45mm for youth, 50-55mm for club and collegiate.
  3. Net or court motif. The one element that makes a volleyball medal identifiable.
  4. Ribbon approach. Team colors grouped by team, or a printed event ribbon.
  5. One consolidated order. One run means one plating batch and matching medals.

We run three-stage QC after casting, after plating, and after assembly, and our line produces 30,000+ pcs per day. For a full league order, that means your medals arrive as one consistent batch. Volume pricing for league-size orders is explained on our bulk custom medals page.

Send us your team count, players per team, and whether you need a finals podium set, and we will quote both tiers together.

Data to confirm: Confirm current MOQ, sample lead time, and ribbon printing options with the factory before finalizing a league order, as these vary with capacity during peak season.

FAQ

How do I make a volleyball medal recognizable? Add the net. The net silhouette is unique to volleyball and survives die-casting well as a bold shape. A stylized court diagram also works, especially on 50mm or larger medals. Avoid fine ball seam details, which blur at production thickness.

What size volleyball medal should we order? 40-45mm for youth, 45-50mm for high school, 50-55mm for club and collegiate, and up to 60mm for adult open divisions. Beach and outdoor awards do better with antique or matte finishes than mirror-bright ones.

Should tournament champion medals differ from league medals? Yes. Make the champion medal visually distinct, not just a larger version of the league medal. Otherwise both awards are diminished and the champion achievement is less recognizable.

How many medals should a league order? Multiply teams by players per team, then add a small buffer for late registrations. Order all teams in one run so the plating batch matches and every team receives identical medals.

What ribbon works best for volleyball medals? Team or school colors in 20-25mm width, or gold, silver, and bronze matched exactly to the plating for place awards. A custom printed ribbon with the event name and year adds specificity at low cost.

How far ahead should we order? Start 8-10 weeks before season end. Design proof comes back within 24 hours of artwork, sampling runs 7-10 days, and production runs 7-15 days after approval.
