Swimming is a corrosion problem first — pool chlorine and salt water are two of the worst things a plated finish can meet. Cycling adds a weight problem, because a medal rides in a jersey pocket or saddle bag for hours. Triathlon gets both. Road running is the lightest on hardware and the heaviest on design and cost pressure, which is why most race medals land there.


Waterproof and Corrosion-Resistant Finishes

The finish decides how long the medal survives the sport. Water events are where that choice actually matters.

Standard plated medals leave our line sealed with an anti-oxidation oil coat, applied after the tunnel oven dries the surface at 100°C for 40 minutes. That seal handles sweat, rain, and sunscreen. For pool and open-water events, stainless steel skips the plating question entirely — it’s stamped, not die-cast, and there’s nothing to corrode, so no seal to fail. On a MedalOrigin order, that seal is standard, not an upgrade. If a swim meet insists on the classic gold look, we plate and seal a zinc alloy body, and the oil coat is what carries it through the season. Weight: What Athletes Actually Notice

Endurance athletes feel every gram. The medal hangs on a neck that has already done the work.

A die-cast zinc medal at 2.5mm runs about 40–60g with its ribbon; brass nearly doubles that. For swim and cycling events we hold the diameter around 50–60mm and keep thickness near 2.5mm, and athletes notice the difference at the podium. It’s the same design language, just trimmed. Nobody walks off with a lighter medal thinking it felt cheap — the lightest medal that still feels like an award is the target.


Finish-Line vs Finisher Medals: Two Different Products

A course medal and a memento medal do different jobs. Budget them separately.

A finish-line medal is worn on the course, in the finish photo, then usually retired to a drawer or passed along. A finisher medal is the keepsake — it lives on a shelf for years. Different jobs, different budgets. Course medals lean light and durable because they compete with a race bib and sweat. Finisher medals can carry heavier metal, more enamel, and the personalization, because they’re not moving. When an event tells us “we want both,” we treat them as two SKUs, not one design twice.


Grade Colors and Distance Badges

Gold, silver, and bronze map to 1st, 2nd, 3rd — that system is universal, so don’t fight it.

For age-group and wave winners, colored categories carry farther than thin text. Red, blue, and green enamel reads instantly across a finish line, and we match to Pantone so a club’s colors tie the podium to the brand. Distance badges work the same way — a sprint, an Olympic, and a full-distance medal in different colors or slightly different sizes, so the collection tells the story at a glance. Laser Engraving: Personal Times and Names

The one detail that turns a medal into a record is the back.

Laser engraving is the only method on our print line that changes from medal to medal without a new screen or plate. Names, finish times, and bib numbers go on individually, so 2,000 finishers can each hold their exact time on the back. That makes it our go-to for triathlon and marathon fields — variable content is free at scale. Pair it with a colorful enamel face on the front and you’ve got a keepsake, not a trinket.
